Trump Returns To WHCD After Attempt On His Life
Just months after gunfire abruptly ended the organization’s annual banquet, President Donald Trump will take the stage once more on Friday to speak at a rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Waldorf Astoria.
“In April, President Trump promised to finish the job and plan another WHCA Dinner, and on Friday, he will deliver on that promise. We look forward to a great and fun evening celebrating 250 years of American greatness and a free press,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News Digital.
During the country’s 250th anniversary year in April, Trump was present at the first dinner.
Throughout his first term, he avoided the event due to ongoing conflicts with the media.
Following the chaos of the April dinner, this month’s gathering is expected to foster unity, featuring a more personal guest list.
“This dinner will not only be an opportunity to carry out our program. It will be a statement that violence has no place in American life and a free press will not be intimidated into silence,” Weijia Jiang, president of The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), said when the new date was announced for the event.
“As you have all demonstrated, courage and community can and should rise above,” Weijia Jiang added in her statement this week.
The Washington Hilton has traditionally hosted the annual dinner.
However, this year’s banquet descended into chaos when Cole Allen, an armed suspect, stormed the event in what authorities claim was an attempt to kill the president.
The incident prompted Secret Service agents to rush the president and first lady from the room as guests scrambled for cover, abruptly ending the dinner.
The WHCA said in a press release on Tuesday that it will recognize U.S. Secret Service Officer Victor Gonzales at Friday’s dinner for his efforts in preventing an armed suspect from entering the ballroom.
Cole attempted to break into the Washington Hilton while Gonzales was at a security checkpoint.
“The WHCA is deeply grateful that law enforcement officials prevented the armed suspect from entering the ballroom,” said Jiang.
“Officer Gonzales played a significant role when he ran toward danger so that thousands of others could make it home safely. His courage stemmed from a dedication to service, which we are looking forward to honoring this week,” she added.
Due to prior obligations, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance, and First Lady Melania Trump will not be present, but many Cabinet members will be.
Attendees include Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, FBI Director Kash Patel, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Oz Pearlman, a mentalist, will be back to entertain the guests.
As the war with Iran dominated news, dozens of anti-war demonstrators gathered outside the Washington Hilton for the April dinner. As U.S. military operations continue, similar protests may greet attendees on Friday.
The event also coincides with Trump’s use of a series of high-profile speeches, such as his primetime speech on election security last week, to highlight the priorities of his administration.
Following the April dinner’s cancellation, Trump expressed his hope that it would take place again and hinted at a less combative tone for his final remarks.
He claimed that although he was ready to “really rip” the press, he decided it would not have been appropriate to make such a speech following the shooting.
“I think I’m going to be probably very nice. I’ll be very boring the next time. But we’re going to have a great event,” Trump said.
The event also comes as Trump is weighing major options in the conflict against Iran.
