Surrey police investigating fight at fast-food restaurant

Police in Surrey responded to a fight inside a fast-food restaurant in the 6400 block of 144 Street in Sullivan Heights on Thursday (Feb. 6).

Video shows a group of young men approaching a man, the victim, sitting at a table eating his lunch inside the Donair Affair, when one of the young men starts to raise his voice him.

The young man then picks up a chair and starts to hit the victim over the head several times while continuing to yell at him. One person appears to grab the chair from the young man’s hands to stop him. At that point, the man continues to punch the victim.

A group inside and outside the fast-food restaurant can be seen watching the incident.

Surrey Police spokesman Ian MacDonald noted, “We have been told by witnesses that there was an incident or exchange prior to what the video captured.”

Police have been working with the Surrey School District and have spoken to witnesses and the “young people involved.”

Initially MacDonald said the victim had not contacted police, but as of midday Friday reported that the victim was being interviewed.

“Although, some witnesses have indicated that the individual did not appear injured or request assistance when he left the restaurant, we cannot verify the degree of injuries sustained,” MacDonald said.

Surrey Schools communications director Rena Heer said the district was aware of the video and could not share any information about the students, including any disciplinary action.

“The safety of our students and school community is our top priority. Surrey Schools does not condone or tolerate any acts of violence against others,” Heer added. “Immediate next steps for the district include supporting the Surrey Police Service in their investigation and working with any impacted students and their families.”
